Spoiler alert! The following cheat contains spoilers in the form of hints, walkthroughs, guides, or solutions to the game. Viewer discretion is advised.
The game begins with a cinematic cut scene in black and white. It begins with a group photo showing Adolf Hitler as a nondescript volunteer soldier in World War I. He is then seen 10 years later campaigning for the Nazi Party with his customary shining eyes and clenched fist. You play as Standartenführer Gerhard Detlef Mayer, the protagonist of the game, who is there to witness his tribune speech. Mayer, who works for the Gestapo in Berlin, believes initially in Hitler's vision. However, after a visit at a concentration camp, his views change dramatically. There, Mayer witnesses the gas chambers, ovens, frozen limbs, fleshless limbs covered with skin, and other evidences of torture. Mayer also learns of Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's failed invasion of the Eastern Front by the Wehrmacht that has resulted in the death of many thousands of German soldiers. Mayer sees that Hitler is now decimating Germany with a losing war. It is then that Mayer realizes that he has to rid of Hitler to save Germany.

General tips

Select Options in the Main Menu to change the game settings. When playing the game, the menu can be accessed by pressing Esc.

Left click the mouse to perform an action. Right click the mouse to examine an object.

Hover the cursor over an object of interest to trigger the hotspot. The game does not have an option to display all hotspots simultaneously.

Exhaust all dialogs when talking to characters to uncover key information. Failure to do so may prevent you from progressing through the game and force you to backtrack later on to locate the missing information. (Hint: This cheat shows only the vital dialog choices and eliminates all red herrings and superfluous information.)

Read through all notes and letters that you find. Use Mayer's journal as a reminder on what must be done. The journal will glow whenever new information is added.

Double click on where you want to go to instantly walk to there.

Some of the tasks can be done in random order. All of the tasks must be done, however, before the game can progress to the next chapter. At times, you are not permitted to leave a location until all of the tasks there have been completed.

Many hotspots contain only optional information that adds to the back story but are otherwise not necessary to make progress in the game.

None of the puzzles can be skipped.

You cannot lose the game by dying or by being captured. An automatic save is triggered just before you fail. Making frequent saves is still advised to avoid unnecessary backtracking.

Once you have visited and left a location, that location will appear on a map and is now available for quick travel. Otherwise, you have to instruct Wilm, Mayer's chauffeur, on where to go.

Upon selecting Play from the Main Menu, you can choose to play between "Third Reich in colour" to play the game in color or "Third Reich documentary" to play the game in black and white. You can also select Video from Options in the Main Menu and choose between Color, Sepia, or B&W to override the previous choice.

Start the game. The game is akin to 5 card stud poker. For each game, 2 cards are dealt face up and 5 cards are dealt face down (Figure 5). You bet on each card as it is turned up.

The best strategy is to bet the maximum with each card, forcing Kadereit at some stage to bet with a silver key instead of money. Your goal is to win the key (Figure 6). Play until you win the key. Once you win the key, you can quit playing the game. Kadereit invariably wins the first hand, so bet low to save your money. Bet maximum after that.
