City of Secrets is a point-and-click adventure game from Polish newcomer and indie game developer Aidem Media (or aideMMedia). The game has been released on a range of platforms, including the iOS, Linux, Mac, and PC. The game harks back to the classic era of graphic adventure games. Unlike those games of yore, however, this game features 3D character models and 2D hand drawn backgrounds. The game also includes a friendly built-in comprehensive hint system that may lessen the frustration some players will otherwise experience when solving a few of the game's more obscure puzzles.
The plot centers on a quest by Moles (a mole) to rescue his friend Rex (a dog) who has fallen down a hole—not just any ordinary hole, but a hole to a strange city of revolutionary moles. To extricate Rex from the…

There has been very little difference of opinion amongst both adventure game enthusiasts and adventure game designers as to what is causing the current decline of the genre. Famed game designer Ron Gilbert saw the writing on the wall back in 1989, when he created a list of game design pitfalls in an essay subtly titled Why Adventure Games Suck (1). Sadly, his conclusions about the genre still ring true today. The lesson is simple—frustration and entertainment do not mix.
Yet, an obvious problem does not always imply an obvious solution. After all, if adventure game designers set out to ensure that the player will ever have the slightest trouble solving any of the game's puzzles, the result will be an incredibly boring and unsatisfying game offering the player absolutely no sense of…

Steven Spielberg's 1993 science fiction action adventure film Jurassic Park was undeniably a box office juggernaut, achieving both commercial and critical acclaims. The film spawned a new movie franchise, with a second and third film subsequently released in 1997 and 2001 and a fourth film purported to be in the making. The cultural legacy of this movie franchise was also undeniable—it was universally praised for raising the bar for computer generated imagery in moviemaking. Not surprisingly, the popularity of Jurassic Park had led to a number of video games based on the licensed franchise. After a slow but steady string of mediocre games released over the years since the premiere of the original film, it was finally Telltale Games' turn to bring Jurassic Park back for yet another…

Released in 2004, Forever Worlds (also known as Forever Worlds: Enter the Unknown) was a largely forgetful game from the obscure and little-known developer Hexagon Entertainment. Created by Courtland Shakespeare, the game was meant to be yet another attempt to regurgitate Shakespeare's own inimitable style of adventure games which he practiced since 1995. It was back then that Shakespeare, under the ill-fated developer ELOI Productions, first conceived the formula for an adventure game involving an eccentric archaeologist, lost ancient worlds, and many brain teasing puzzles—all tied to a nearly nonexistent back story. This game would later be released as Jewels of the Oracle. Although the game was considered a success by critics, it failed commercially. Still, the game was to become the…

Rhem 2: The Cave is a game created by Knut Müller, a German artist, musician, and game designer. Like the other games in the Rhem series, Rhem 2: The Cave is set in the mysterious industrial world of Rhem. Resembling a giant, abandoned factory, this world is full of locked doors, secret passages, puzzles, trains and trams, and a seemingly endless supply of baffling puzzles. Of most interest to fans of Myst, Rhem 2: The Cave is a good value for any gamer who prefers clever puzzles over fancy graphics.

In 1997, Madrid based game development company Pendulo Studios released an adventure game called Hollywood Monsters—about a duo of reporters attending Hollywood's annual Monster Ball, a gathering of Universal Monsters from the golden age of cinema. Drawn: Trail of Shadows is the third game in the Drawn series from Big Fish Games Studios. The previous games, Drawn: The Painted Tower and Drawn: Dark Flight, tell the story of a young girl named Iris with a magical ability whose life is endangered by a shadowy villain. The second game ends with Iris vanquishing her enemy and taking her place as the rightful ruler of the kingdom of Stonebriar. With an ending as conclusive as this, fans of the series may be left wondering what direction the third game will take, since there does not seem to be any more story left to tell.
Drawn: Trail of Shadows begins with a narration from Franklin, Iris' elderly guardian. Franklin tells Iris the story of a young boy who has the ability—just like Iris—to create paintings that can become doorways into…

Odissea - An Almost True Story is proclaimed by its developer Midian Design to be a game which "almost" recounts Homer's story of the journey of Ulysses (or Odysseus in the Greek myths) as he tries to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. The game has early glimpses of potential and tries hard to entertain with an offbeat plot and humorous dialog. Unfortunately, it is let down on several fronts, resulting in a mediocre and unfulfilling experience.
The story is where the game excels most. It begins with Ulysses, King of Ithaca, as he begins his journey home after the decade long siege of Troy. With his ego buoyed by the success of his wooden horse ruse, Ulysses mocks the god of the seas, Poseidon, during a celebration after the massacre. In retaliation, the trident wielding deity…

Hector: The Badge of Carnage is a series of episodic adventure games developed by Irish developer Straandlooper Animation and published by Telltale games. The series features an obese, foulmouthed bully of a detective named Hector and his effete and dull-witted partner, Lambert. The third episode, called Beyond Reasonable Doom, continues the story of the previous games in the series, pitting Hector against a wily misanthrope named Barnsley, who has nefarious plans for Clappers Wreake, a small town in the Midlands area of England.
The story begins with Hector and Lambert trapped in a sewer and wearing no clothes but hospital gowns. In what must certainly be among the most memorable opening scenes ever presented in an adventure game, Hector must run on a treadmill to prevent the chamber…

The Space Quest series emanated from the wacky minds of Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, affectionately known as the "Two guys from Andromeda". Crowe created the music and visual art, whereas Murphy programmed the script and logic. After releasing a trio of successful games earlier, Crowe and Murphy embarked on their most ambitious game yet for the series—Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers. The game was meant to be a parody of both Star Trek and Star Wars, filled with obvious clichés and homage paid to both series throughout. The game even made a parody of itself, by including references to nonexistent games in the series that supposedly would be released in the future. Sadly, the release of this game spelt the end of a creative partnership forged by Crowe and Murphy, as they…

Jan Theysen is the cofounder and creative director of King Art Games as well as a self-professed fan of classic adventure games such as The Secret of Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer. Founded in 2000, King Art Games has quickly established itself as a developer of downloadable and browser based casual games. With The Book of Unwritten Tales, however, the company has now transitioned into making full-length, standalone adventure games. After some unfortunate time lost in litigation, the game has finally been localized from German to English and is scheduled for release in late 2011.
We are privileged to have an opportunity to interview Jan Theysen about The Book of Unwritten Tales. In the interview, Theysen speaks about the history of King Art Games, the legal struggles with HMH…
